Brochure spreads

I choose to do my brochure on crossfit. It is a new hobby of mine. i designed the layout to first talk about the sport itself, and then move on to the competition side of the sport. i used images with low opacity with the logos, and weights image as a background. i threw in pictures of various workouts to first take up white space but also show the various workouts that crossfit includes. on the inside pages i added either quotes or crossfit slogans and made them blue to stand out. i liked the red on white for the sub headings. the only problem i ran into was filling information on the back pages so i decided to make the last topic take up three panels.

Magazine Spread Photos

i like the design of this spread because it made good use of the large text in the middle, in the red font which makes it stand out. it is divided into four text columns per page which gives it good balance with a lot of information.

I like this spread because it utilizes the pictures well. each column has its own picture that helps to illustrate the information. the title sticks out well along with the sub-heading, along with the organization being handled well.

I enjoy the design of this spread because it uses the pictures to divide the text and it makes them really grab attention. the expert on the left side is bold and gives a skimming reader an idea of what to expect.

I think the large title in this spread is used nicely. the graphic along the bottom or Representative of a time line and flow with the article well. there is 6 columns per page.

I really enjoyed this spread mostly because of the positioning of the pictures. they are spread through the article. with one even continuing on the second page. the middle columns of text seem to be larger than the outside ones which seems to work on the occasion.

Logo Sketch

My Business is named Calhoun Elite Security. My logos were a combination of different uses of the intials and a few images that represents security. the use of the logo is important becuase it will not only be used on business cards, signs etc, but also used on company shirts or security uniforms. my idea for this company was special event security/ personal security.

Wordmarks- my word mark logos are of two varieties. the first is a more modern font overlapping each other. this is the initails of the company and would be easily recognized. the second is a script logo of the entire name of the company.

Symbol/Icon- the symbols used are things i figured would be good symbols of security. these are not extremly professional symbols but are unique and could be easily recognizable. there is minor wording on both symbols but mostly of symbol.

Combonation- the combonation logos are similar to the other logos. the first one is the lock that is used for the symbol logo but has a much larger inital logo. the second is a print of the full company name with a new symbol of barbwire wrapping around the intial characters.

Type Categories

OLD STYLE

this is old style because it has a diagonal stress. it has serifs, on lower case, and a decent thick to thin transition.

Modern

this modern type has a vertical stress, radical thick to thin transitions, and has thin serifs.

Slab Serif

there is very little transition from thin to thick, and a strong vertical stress.

Sans Serif

this style is Sans serif because there is no serifs, no thick to thin translation,

Script

this is script, because of its stylish appearance. it almost appears to be hard written cursive.

Decorative

decorative is distinct and easily picked out.

Type Relationship

Concordant

this image is an example of concordant because it uses a very similar font if not the same and  image seems fairly formal and orderly.

this book page is a good example of concordant because it is the same font. it is designed this way to ensure ease of reading. nothing in particular stands out. all the text is harmonious and simply arranged.

Conflicting

the bold in facebook makes it stand out and makes it hard to concentrate on the rest.

this image seems to be conflicting because of the last line "Costumes a must". this line is very similar to the rest but it seems to stick out because it looks a little bigger.

Contrast

the "Tricks and treats" is a different font from the rest of the invitation and really stands out
r
the "direct" is a different font size and a different style. it is used to draw attention to it and show it is the most important part of the ad.

Alignment examples

there is pretty good alignment with the adrees, Phone #s, email and website.

the alignment helps distinguish what equipment each paragraph is talking about.

all the fighters names are aligned at the top, the yellow banner area aligned the info about the event. and the alignment  of the logo info and sponsors.

large font aligns around the picture, and the subtext is aligned at the bottom.

the top font is aligned well and attracts attention. the story text in the middle is aligned in the middle and centers the ad well.

this is similar the the example we seen in the book. it has alignment in the middle but has bad alignment because the info on the sides.

the alignment of the sponsors is clustered and does not divide it to evenly or have good symmetry.

Proximity

This groups basically all the subjects together. the red seams of the baseball catch my eye first but then my eye wonders to all the other sports equipment.

this ad is for the Europe music awards shown on MTV and its sponsors. this groups the sponsors in away that they so they are easy to see and with all the logos together the way they are makes the viewer quickly know these are the sponsors.

Movie poster are a good example of using proximity to show subject matter. the designer put the title next to the dragon in order to draw attention of the viewer to both.

this image groups the words together, much like a scrabble board to make the viewer focus on the letters.

they subject matter is the tagline of extra grip which is why the bottle was placed with in the glove. they are trying to market it as a sports drink so they used a baseball glove with the water.

Project 1 research

Jerry N. Uelsmann: He combined pictures in the particular work to make a person in the water appear to have wings. i like a lot of his gallery because of the odd and unreal combinations he makes. i was fascinated to know he does his works without a computer. this particular work interested me because it has a very intriguing feel. i am not sure if he intended this to be a self portrait. however it gives a sense of mystery. you wonder if the figure is a angle with the appearance of wings. or if he or she is similar to the bird that is pictured. the trail of sunlight in the water gives what seems like a path to show what direction the figure is going. this could also be symbolism because the figure is heading in what appears to be deeper waters. this could be Uelsmann's way of showing a person going into an unknown future.

Levi Van Veluw:  Levi's overall work is very unique and eye catching. the meticulous detail that goes into his work is unreal. as for his work being a reflection of himself i am not sure, but he shows a great deal of personification in objects you would not think of. his lights collection shows bright lights in the shape of his own face. the landscape collection could be trying to communicate the idea of personal qualities of nature, and thinking of the earth more as a person. a common theme of all his work is the depressed or stone look on all of his work.
